Class XI class members spent three days in Topeka learning how the needs of the many are taken care of and represented. They met with all three branches of government (legislative, executive and judicial) and several state leaders including Secretary of State, Secretary of Agriculture, the Attorney General and the Secretary of Treasury. Class members also heard from leaders of agricultural groups and the director of the Topeka Rescue Mission. Legislators this session are going to be busy working on redistricting, school finance, and the governor’s tax plan. Class members heard frequently about the importance of approaching issues with an open mind, gathering a variety of sources of information, and the willingness to negotiate and compromise.

Class XI participants have attended two seminars recently – in November they learned about economic development in Garden City and in early December they learned about serving on boards and practiced their communication skills in Colby and discovered the community development work Atwood residents are doing to make their community thrive. If you’d like to learn more about each of these seminars, please go to the “Program” section of this website to read the scribe notes and see a few pictures. In mid-January, Class XI will attend the “Needs of the Many” seminar in Topeka where they’ll learn about state government and organizations serving the less fortunate in Topeka.
