Back on the track! The 2021 Kentucky Derby will be the 147th running of the race.
The Derby returns to its traditional date on the first Saturday in May, when it has been held for 89 of the last 90 years. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic the 2020 race was delayed to September and had no paid attendance. The Derby typically has one of the highest audiences of all North American sporting events, in the range of 150,000 in recent years, which includes a large infield crowd. The 2021 will have reduced attendance – reserved seating has been limited to 40% to 50% of capacity with a possibility of 60% depending on state approval. About 15,000 general admission tickets to the infield will also be sold – roughly 25% to 30% of capacity.
The KARL Program delayed its seminar schedule for KARL Class XV, but never stopped during the pandemic. We’re on track in August for Genesis 2.0, with remaining seminars planned for Pittsburg (Dec), Wichita (Jan), Hays (Feb) and the Blue Chip and International study tours.
KARL Alumni and Friends are invited to participate in a 5-day cultural study tour August 4-8, 2021 to Kentucky. We hope you will join us for horses, bourbon, tobacco, bluegrass! KENTUCKY TOUR
We could all argue that staying on track throughout a pandemic makes us all winners. Being engaged with the KARL Program through online events and efforts through the KARL Network and its leadership development helps improve ourselves, our communities, and our state, and this is what takes us to the finish line!
Much of the journey to the winner’s circle is about staying on track.
The KARL Network stands the test of time as a proven and great way to CONNECT and make a difference! We are grateful for KARL alumni and friends who stay engaged and the many who have re-engaged with the Program in recent years. Positive growth is not easy and cannot be done alone. But, when we unleash the potential of changemakers across Kansas, anything is possible!

Your help to identify, encourage, and mentor leaders who are actively involved in agriculture, related organizations, and rural communities is key to the continued growth of KARL.
People are our greatest asset and warrant the greatest investment for the most optimal return for the future of Kansas. The KARL network becomes stronger with each new class.
“As a mid-career professional with both a background and future in Kansas, I was drawn to KARL in order to “catch a vision” for how I might continue to make a difference in our state. The KARL program is perfectly suited to do just that. It is, at once, informational, relationship-building, and outlook-changing. In an age when we need leaders who can simultaneously hold on to core convictions yet also be open to other perspectives (in a kind of ad hoc way, being humbly willing to at least occasionally admit we might not know everything!), both information and healthy friendships are required. We need new information as well as new relationships with others who are different than us. KARL offers that—both in our classmates and in the speakers we meet. All of this fosters an innovative, “non-group-think” community (where a diversity of political and vocational perspectives can be shared) in which we inevitably develop personal connections with people in counties and leadership roles completely different than our own. I have been able to both learn more about our state’s complexity, while also nurturing much-needed friendships with folks who are different than me. Justin Kastner Manhattan
