When I moved to Kansas two years ago I thought it was a “holding place.” Growing up in West Texas I always thought that Texas is home, that is where I’m going to live forever. Then I was offered my dream, meaning I had to move 12+ hours from home where I didn’t know a soul. I was excited, but also scared and nervous. How could I call Kansas home? Then I was told about the KARL program. I thought not only is this a great opportunity for leadership training, but maybe I’ll meet a few friends along the way. That was a huge understatement. Not only have I been able to see amazing parts of rural Kansas, but I have met some of the most incredible leaders. Leaders who have completely changed their communities, brought life to rural Kansas, and have inspired me to be my best self. I’ve seen how one person can impact so many lives and enrich their community. Now when asked by my Texan friends and family, “when will you move back?” “how can you live so far away?" I simply tell them that I've found a new home in Kansas, and that I can't wait to see what else this incredible state and KARL has in store for me. Allison Burenheide De Soto
