Extended Trip

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” --Henry Miller

KARL Class XV just returned from its international study tour to the United Arab Emirates. A very long flight – to and from – a different language, a unique culture, a constitutional federation of seven emirates. An independent country since 1971 – a baby in terms of most history of our world, a literacy rate almost 95% and with a culture steeped in traditions and a drive for the future – there is even a Museum of the Future. The tallest building (2,717 feet), largest camel dairy (10,000 head), deepest pool (169.9 feet), fastest roller coaster (180 mph), oldest irrigation system (for over 120,000 date palms)…all in nation only 50 years old!

“So much of who we are is where we have been.” –William Langewiesche

Every KARL Fellow has a different story of their international study tour. The Program has had a different destination for each class. One consistent message is not only the memories, but the extended impact the experience has on each and every participant. The study tour becomes an extended trip, not necessarily of continued travel, but critical thought in the ways we see our world, our community, our farms and ranches, the way we view economies, food and people and culture

– we see things through a larger lens.

In the coming days, where are you headed? What difference will you make that your view creates and your grit makes happen?

As we close the gap on another KARL class and welcome Class XVI (applications are due APRIL 1st), we are determined to deliver what’s next with quality and intentionality that supports what legendary leaders are made of for the future of agriculture and rural Kansas.

See what’s ahead! We also hope you will join us June 4th for the KARL Big Event in Manhattan.

All KARL alumni and stakeholders welcome!

Sincerely,

The KARL Team

Class XV just returned Tuesday, March 29th from their International Study Tour (IST) to United Arab Emirates - a tour highlight was a visit to Camelicious, the largest camel dairy in the world with 10,000 camels that processes milk, ice cream, and other camel milk products. Feed is shipped in from around the world. Camel milk has higher antioxidants, is lower in saturated fat, and said to be better for those who are lactose intolerant. Camel milk products are available worldwide including here in the US.

The KARL program provides an opportunity to reacquaint with the ever-changing landscape that is evolving throughout our communities and beyond. As a self-described traveled Kansan, as well as my farm/cattle lineage – it was enlightening to be a part of each seminar where the take-aways brought something new and profound. Understanding strengths and weaknesses, discussing resolutions, creating partnerships, challenging one another through a tough world pandemic – my KARL classmates encourage and exemplify leadership. Having just returned from our International Study Tour,  I am grateful for the opportunity to share this program with my connections/colleagues in agriculture across Kansas to build upon the growth it has provided me to think differently as well as form lasting connections with some of the most amazing people.
